The name of Josiah Prince first appears in public records on February 18, 1793 as a witness to a deed between John Holcombe and Richard Prince. Richard bought 100 acres on Mountain Creek of the Big Generostee of the Savannah River. Four years later, on March 27, 1797, made oath concerning this purchase. (note: Richard Prince is undoubtedly the father of Josiah, as is shown in the Will of Richard Prince, filed in Spartanburg Co., SC)

On September 1, 1797, Richard Prince sold this same land to Thomas Hay, "being part of a grant to John Holcombe and signed by Richard Prince and Edward Prince. Again, the witness was Josiah Prince.

Also in 1797, Zachariah Holcombe sold 160 acres of land on the Big Generostee that was bounded by Thomas Hay, the same man that Richard Prince sold land to in that year. It's obvious that Zachariah and John Holcombe were close neighbors of Richard Prince. Zachariah Holcombe later moved to Warren Co., KY, about the year 1805. This was about the same time that Aaron, Moses, Gilbert, Levi, Eli and Nathan Prince also moved to Warren Co., KY. These Prince men were the progenitors of the numerous Prince's that later settled in Bedford Co., TN, about the year 1810-12.

Land record show that both the Holcombe and Prince families originated in Union Dist., SC, then moved to Pendleton Dist., SC, then some to Habersham Co., GA, some to Warren Co., KY, some to Monroe, McMinn, Warren and Polk Co.'s, TN, and some to Haywood and Cherokee Co.'s, NC. The evidence is strong that all of the numerous Prince's were closely related and all had their roots in Union Dist., SC.

Even the Holcombe's originated in Union Dist, SC. Phillip Holcombe took a deed in Union District on November 22, 1797, from Edward Prince and his mother Secily Prince. This land was bounded by the land of Benjamin Holcombe. A witness was Soloman Holcombe.

Edward Prince was the son of James and Secily Prince and the brother of Rev. War veteran John Prince, Senior, who moved to Habersham Co., GA in the early 1820s. Zachariah Holcombe, who lived near Richard Prince in Pendleton District in the 1790s, was also a native of Union District.

Darius Prince, son of Joseph Prince of Union District, married Jensie Holcombe in the early 1800s.

Josiah Prince appears in the 1800, 1810? (shown as Joshua?) and 1820 census of Pendleton District, SC. His father Richard Prince bought land in nearby Spartanburg Co., SC. One deed, dated 1787, Book B, shows Richard Prince and wife Edith of Union District, SC, sells part of a grant of 440 acress from the governor of SC to Richard Prince, dated March 6, 1786. Richard Prince died in Spartanburg County. His Will is dated March 28, 1811. He names sons Josiah, John and William. Also a daughter named Martha. Josiah next appears in the 1830 census of Monroe Co., TN.
